Sophie Calle's "Matrimoni, Rotture e Funerali inclusi" Opens at MAXXI in Rome Through February 2027

exhibition · 2026-10-06

"Matrimoni, Rotture e Funerali inclusi," an exhibition at MAXXI in Rome, runs until 7 February 2027 and delves into themes of death and loss. It begins with Sophie Calle's "Dolore squisito," which showcases 200 framed panels alongside a blood-red telephone from Delhi, symbolizing her lover's departure communicated through a telegram. Calle's connection with Hervé Guibert, who died from AIDS in 1991, inspired "No Sex Last Night," although it is not part of this exhibition. Curator Simona Antonacci highlights Calle's ironic take on grief. Among other pieces is "Non ho potuto catturare la morte," created near her mother’s deathbed. On 11 October, a permanent installation was unveiled at Rome's Cimitero Acattolico, where Calle has acquired graves for visitors to share secrets. The exhibit concludes with a video of elderly residents from Istanbul witnessing the sea for the first time.
