Sonsbeek 2026: Europe's Oldest Public Art Exhibition Returns to Arnhem

The 13th edition of Sonsbeek Art Projects, the oldest public art exhibition in Europe, is taking place in Arnhem, Netherlands, until October 11, 2026. Curated by Amira Gad and Christina Li, the event is centered around the theme 'Memory as Living Action' and showcases the work of 18 artists. Since its inaugural edition in 1949, which underscored the significance of art in public spaces during a time of reconstruction, this year's motto, 'I don't need a garden, I share a park,' promotes communal space through a series of 100 days filled with performances, screenings, meetings, workshops, and a symposium in collaboration with Radboud Universiteit and Rozet. Highlights include Femke Herregraven's forest ecosystem installation, Larry Achiampong's wrapped monuments, and Jumana Manna's textiles created by Palestinian prisoners. Additional artists featured are Anne-Mie Van Kerckhoven, Jota Mombaça, and Fanja Bouts. Director Orlando Maaike Gouwenberg emphasizes the exhibition's historical significance and its potential for future reinterpretation.
