Sonia Delaunay: The Multidisciplinary Vanguardist Who Brought Simultaneism to Everyday Life

artist · 2026-04-19

Sonia Delaunay, a versatile artist born in Ukraine in 1885, is recognized for her innovative approach to everyday items through avant-garde techniques. Her art is featured in renowned institutions such as the Centre Pompidou and the Musée de la Mode de Paris. After studying in Karlsruhe and Paris, she wed Wilhelm Uhde in 1908 and then Robert Delaunay in 1910. Together, they pioneered simultaneism, drawing inspiration from Eugène Chevreul's theories on color. In 1913, she produced the first simultaneous object, a crib quilt, which she showcased at the Berlin Autumn Salon. During World War I, she delved into popular art in Madrid, launched a Casa Sonia boutique in 1917, and created designs for the Ballets Russes. In 1964, she became the first living woman to hold a solo exhibition at the Louvre.
