SoBA Architects Transforms Kunshan Plot into Musical Landscape Park
Orchestra Park, designed by SoBA Architects, is located in Kunshan, China, transforming an 8,500 sqm urban area into a public space that harmonizes natural settings with social facilities. Situated within the Huaqiao Economic Development Zone, nestled between residential neighborhoods and waterways, the park draws from the traditional 'Jiangnan Silk and Bamboo' musical heritage of Kunshan, translating its rhythms into flowing shapes and winding pathways. A circular route links Xugongqiao Road with residential zones to the north and south, effectively dividing the park into a riverside green belt featuring observation platforms and shaded trails, and a recreational area that includes a skatepark, climbing spots, a fitness playground, an outdoor theater, bamboo trails, a musical fountain plaza, and a small music classroom. The design preserves mature trees such as camphor and dawn redwoods through a 'minimal intervention, maximum impact' approach, enhancing the ecosystem while maintaining the woodland and varied terrain. This strategy embodies SoBA's 'Soft Build' philosophy, which prioritizes adaptability and contextual awareness to encourage social engagement and ecological benefits in densely populated urban settings, thereby transforming an underutilized plot into a vibrant community space.
