SO Arquitetura & Design Converts 13 m² Azores Storage Building into Mini Atalhada Residence

architecture-design · 2026-09-14

SO Arquitetura & Design has transformed a small storage building into a residence called Mini Atalhada in Atalhada, Lagoa, on São Miguel Island in the Azores, Portugal. The original structure had a footprint of only 13 m², and the project explores the minimum limits of contemporary living. The building sits within a consolidated urban frontage near the sea and was acquired by the architectural studio for this purpose. The completed project has a total area of 377 ft² and is scheduled for completion in 2026. The design team includes main architects Bruno Furtado and Gonçalo Blétière Lopes, with co-authorship by Margarida Condeixa, Neuza Duarte, and Mariana Figueiredo. Engineering services were provided by Teorema Contínuo - Unipessoal Lda, while Tecnicouto, Lda served as builder. TECNIQ handled light design, and Roberto Aguiar was responsible for acoustic, fluids, and thermal engineering. SO Arquitetura & Design also contributed to inspection, landscape, visual identity, and interior design. The project falls under the categories of Houses and House Interiors. Photographs were taken by Ivo Tavares Studio. The conversion and extension of the storage building highlight adaptive reuse and compact living in a coastal Azorean context.
