Snøhetta transforms Huset, world's northernmost fine dining restaurant in Svalbard
The world’s northernmost fine dining establishment, Huset, located in Longyearbyen, Svalbard at 78 degrees north, has been renovated by the Norwegian architecture firm Snøhetta. Originally constructed in 1951 for various community activities, it continues to serve as a central gathering place despite the downturn in mining. Snøhetta’s design showcases Svalbard’s ingenuity, incorporating materials such as stained oak, Öland stone counters, red linoleum, and stainless steel. Notable features include moiré-effect fabric panels and timber-framed sliding panels. The furniture comprises Swedish pine chairs by Simmer and tables crafted by Snøhetta. Head chef Alberto Lozano presents a 14-course Arctic Experience menu utilizing local ingredients, complemented by a wine cellar housing over 1,000 selections.
