Smug Unveils Kapunda Silo Mural Celebrating Mining Heritage in Australia

Artist Smug (Sam Bates) has completed a large-scale mural on historic silos in Kapunda, Australia, depicting a 19th-century copper mine interior. The project was curated by Juddy Roller, the studio behind Australia's Silo Art Trail, and took over 35 days using more than 300 liters of paint. The mural honors the town's mining history and represents part of Smug's series of nine silo artworks across Australia, including locations like Lameroo, Wirrabara, and Rupanyup. The Kapunda Silo Project involved two years of community fundraising and volunteer efforts, positioning the town as a cultural destination near the Barossa Valley. Juddy Roller's Creative Director Shaun Hossack described Smug's work as setting a national benchmark for large-scale muralism through its blend of technical skill and emotional depth.
