Smithsonian Air and Space Museum Turns 50 with Art Exhibition on Space Travel

The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington DC celebrates its 50th anniversary with an exhibition titled 'The Art of Air and Space: Interpretations of Flight', showcasing over 8,000 artworks from its collection, including pieces by Alexander Calder, Annie Leibovitz, Norman Rockwell, Alma Thomas, and Robert Rauschenberg. The exhibition, curated by Carolyn Russo, is displayed in the revamped Flight and the Arts Center. It highlights how artists have captured space travel, from Bruce Stevenson's 1961 portrait of Alan Shepard that inspired NASA's art program to Rauschenberg's 'Moon Museum' ceramic wafer reportedly left on the lunar surface during Apollo 12. The show features works from NASA's art program (1962-1974), led by James Dean, who transferred about 2,000 artworks to the museum. Notable pieces include Rockwell's 'Man's First Step on the Moon' (1967), painted before the actual landing, and Thomas's 'Blast Off' (1972), inspired by rocket launches. A temporary exhibition, 'The Ascent of Rauschenberg: Reinventing the Art of Flight', features 30 works by Robert Rauschenberg, many never before displayed. The museum, one of the most visited globally, also houses iconic artifacts like the Wright brothers' flyer and Apollo 11 command module.
