architecture-design · 2026-10-02

SmithGroup has finalized the second phase of the Center for Advanced Care for Advocate Health Care in Chicago, Illinois. This phase includes an 8-story medical tower characterized by its curved southern facade made of unitized glass and perforated metal fins. Launched in 2018, the project gained urgency due to the pandemic, leading to a collaborative Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) strategy with Turner Construction, Inc. Senior architect Brian Powers highlighted the team's success in adhering to the expedited timeline. Envelope testing occurred 70% off-site, surpassing the 40% prefabrication target and cutting installation time by almost 10 weeks. Situated in Lake View, the tower features thicker laminated glass for sound reduction and a highly insulated envelope. The final phase is expected to be completed by 2030.
