Sky Arte Documentary on Artemisia Gentileschi Premieres August 29

Sky Arte will premiere the documentary "Artemisia – Un’artista sotto accusa" on Saturday, August 29, directed by Pietro Messina. The film is part of the "Italian Season" series, a collection of seven documentaries produced by Sky Arts Production Hub that explores Italy's central role in global art history from diverse perspectives. Messina, known for his film "L’Attesa," examines key moments in Artemisia Gentileschi's life, highlighting her as a master of chiaroscuro and a symbol of European feminism for her defiance against the patriarchal system of her time. The narrative centers on the rape she suffered as a young woman and the subsequent trial initiated by her father, painter Orazio Gentileschi, against artist and friend Agostino Tassi. The documentary features moving paintings animated by actors who physically resemble the real protagonists, and incorporates handwritten letters by the artist as a narrative thread.
