Six and Frost Create Six Bespoke Typefaces for Rapha Rebrand
Rapha, the cycling brand founded in London in 2004 by Simon Mottram, has undergone a brand identity reboot led by agency Six and type foundry Frost. The project resulted in six bespoke typefaces with 48 styles, including Rapha Sans, Rapha Serif, Mono and Semi-Mono, inspired by vintage cycling ephemera from the brand's archive. The brief, directed by CEO Fran Miller and chief brand officer Jodie Harrison, aimed not to reinvent Rapha but to re-energise it and re-establish it as the voice of cycling. The typefaces draw on historic cycling publications, race handouts, event graphics, race jerseys, and technical manuals, as well as type-led advertising from the 1970s, 80s, and 90s. The core script logo remains unchanged. The design system was tested across campaigns, apparel, editorial layouts, digital products, and motion to ensure flexibility. Darren Firth, co-founder and creative director at Six, stated that the goal was to create heritage-informed but not nostalgic typefaces that carry the cadence, tone, and personality of spoken language.
