Sim Chi Yin's 'Longings, Returns' at Storefront for Art and Architecture, New York
The exhibition titled 归舟: Longings, Returns by Sim Chi Yin is on display at Storefront for Art and Architecture in New York from August 8 to 29. It showcases her ongoing photomontage series, The Suitcase is a Little Bit Rotten (2022/23–ongoing), featuring works dated 2026. The UV glass prints illustrate scenes from British-colonised Malaya and include images of her late grandfather, Shen Huansheng, a leftist newspaper editor who was expelled during the Cold War. In May 1949, Shen was deported to Shantou, China, where he joined a guerrilla group and was later executed. The exhibition also features multimedia components and a mural unveiled through performance. Sim, a former journalist, expresses that she no longer pursues objectivity. ArtReview will review the show in September 2026.
