Silver Heights: Minimalist Ontario Cabin by Peter Braithwaite

Silver Heights, a minimalist cabin in Ontario's Trent Hills, was designed by architect Peter Braithwaite. The home is nestled in Carolinian forests and features a smooth façade with crisp angles. Its simple, elegant design makes photography look like renders. The residence seemingly floats within its context, offering views of the Trent-Severn Waterway. The client, a young family, wanted a home that connects physically and visually to the landscape. Braithwaite placed the building slightly down a drumlin slope to create an immersive experience with the land. The main volume has a contemporary hipped roof that blends into the facade, appearing as a continuous piece. Materials include concrete, black metal, rusted steel, and white cedar for warmth. The entry sequence guides visitors through a meandering path, across a drumlin apex, and down to a weathered steel entry. Inside, a view-focused corridor leads to a partially raised platform maximizing connection to the land. The project offers spatial compression before opening into a large room displaying the landscape. Braithwaite describes this as a deliberate processional sequence transforming arrival into a measured experience of revelation. The elevated volume creates a sensation of floating within the view, encouraging connection to the vast landscape.
