Sigma Unveils 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary Lens With RDD Autofocus Motor

other · 2026-10-23

Sigma has announced the 50mm f/1.4 CL DG Contemporary, a compact prime positioned as the start of a "new lineage" within its I Series — one that favors vintage-inspired rendering over clinical sharpness. The all-metal barrel carries both focus and aperture rings, a knurled hood, a magnetic lens cap, and distance markers borrowed from classic optics, with Sigma contrasting its aluminum build against the composite plastics of rival standard primes. Optically, the company claims its "richest" bokeh at f/1.4, with gradual background falloff rather than abrupt transitions. A newly developed RDD (Rotary Direct Drive) actuator underpins autofocus: it reuses the coils and magnets of Sigma's full-size HLA linear motor, rearranged in a circle to fit the barrel and keep the outer diameter small while delivering high torque. Turning the focus ring during autofocus temporarily shifts the lens into manual focus without a toggle switch, and autofocus resumes once the ring stops moving. Sigma also adopted whole-lens extension focusing instead of an inner-focus design to shrink the footprint, and the lens is dust- and splash-resistant. A classic depth-of-field scale aids zone focusing for street work. Sony E-mount and Leica L-mount versions are planned, with shipping and pricing unconfirmed; availability is expected in early spring 2027.
