Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki Says Lens Design Ideas Are 'Limitless' at IBC 2026

other · 2026-10-19

Speaking with Lensvid at IBC 2026, Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki rejected the idea of adding zoom optics to the Aizu Prime cinema line, saying such lenses do not belong in the same category, while pointing to the Cine AF zooms launched the previous year as a popular alternative. The promised 18mm T1.3 Aizu Prime is slated to arrive in 2027. Asked whether Sigma can sustain roughly ten new lenses annually, Yamaki answered affirmatively and described the pool of lens ideas as unlimited, citing improved technology and materials that allow both new designs and upgrades to existing optics. On artificial intelligence, he was blunt: Sigma does not yet use AI in lens development because the knowledge needed for high-quality optics is not available online and remains proprietary to the company. The conversation also covered the new Sigma 20-60mm f/2.8-4 DG Contemporary and Sigma's use of assistive robotics to hold down manufacturing costs. Sigma's recent output includes the BF camera, close to ten photo lenses and a similar number of Aizu Prime cinema lenses.
