Shuyao Huang's 'Still Becoming' at Art Cake Explores Time and Rhythm

Shuyao Huang's exhibition titled 'Still Becoming' is currently showcased at Art Cake in Brooklyn, running until August 30, 2026. This exhibition explores themes of color, repetition, and form as ways to perceive time, disruption, and spatial change. Huang uses bold, simple color bands as intervals, with each band’s hue and width meticulously designed. Influenced by Agnes Martin, Taoism, Zen Buddhism, and the Chinese I Ching, she focuses on color selection, band width, and arrangement. The show is organized into three parts: Breath, Interruption, and Becoming. It begins with 'Journal 1 Life,' a series of small works, and progresses to pieces like 'Balance and Collapse' and 'Interdimensional Dialogue: Confession,' which introduce asymmetry. The concluding section features larger works that maintain structure while revealing interruptions, as seen in 'It Doesn't Quite Stay' and 'Untitled,' where the canvas shows through the bands. Contributions to the exhibition come from Taylor Bielecki, an artist and writer based in Brooklyn.
