Shuriya Davis's 'In the Ultimate I Dwell' at Derosia, New York

Shuriya Davis, a Mississippi-based painter born in 1996, presents 'In the Ultimate I Dwell' at Derosia in New York. The exhibition features nine large canvases of portraits and figures that emerge from swirling color and expressive brushwork, blending into their environments. Davis draws on historical influences from artists like Bob Thompson and Willem de Kooning, as well as Thich Nhat Hanh's 'The Heart of the Buddha’s Teaching,' which informs themes of suffering, compassion, and liberation. Her work explores sentient existence, impermanence, and emptiness. Davis holds an MFA from Mills College (2022) and a BFA from Rhode Island School of Design (2018). Her work has been shown at STARS, Los Angeles; Jan Kaps, Cologne; Derosia, New York; Nahmad Contemporary, New York; The Warehouse, Dallas; and Bureau, New York.
