SHOVK's Black Timber Retreat Opens to Carpathian Views

The Mountain Retreat House, designed by the Ukrainian architecture firm SHOVK, is a holiday residence nestled in the Ukrainian Carpathian Mountains. This compact structure is enveloped in black timber, selected for its sensory appeal and responsiveness to changing seasonal light and weather conditions. The entrance is intentionally shielded for privacy, contrasting with the opposite side, which boasts expansive glazing that captures sweeping views of the Carpathians. Inside, the house features two bedrooms, a private study, and an open-concept living, dining, and kitchen space centered around a fireplace. The design prioritizes material simplicity, strategic openings, and a close connection to the natural surroundings. Lead architects include Ruslan Lytvynenko and Anton Verhun, with architectural visualization by Alexander Velgan.
