Shonibare's Headless Couple Meets Gainsborough at National Gallery
In October 2026, the National Gallery in London will showcase Yinka Shonibare's sculpture Mr and Mrs Andrews without their Heads (1998) alongside Thomas Gainsborough's Mr and Mrs Andrews (circa 1750). This exhibition, titled Yinka Shonibare and Thomas Gainsborough: A Conversation, will be held in the H J Hyams Room to celebrate the 300th anniversary of Gainsborough's birth. The sculpture, which has never been displayed with the painting before, is on loan from the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa. Shonibare's piece features figures without heads and clothing made from African-print Dutch wax cotton, addressing themes of cultural hybridity and trade. Rab MacGibbon, the Bernays Associate Curator of British Paintings, highlights the engaging dialogue and humor present in this pairing.
