Shira Small's 1974 Album Gains Recognition Through A24 Film 'The Drama'

Shira Small, a retired physician assistant, is experiencing renewed attention for her 1974 album 'The Line of Time and the Plane of Now,' recorded when she was 17. Her song 'I Want to Lay With You' features prominently in A24's film 'The Drama,' starring Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The film's music supervisor, Jemma Burns, selected the track for an early romantic scene to establish a nostalgic, charming tone before the story takes a darker turn. Small, now nearly 70, had abandoned music decades ago due to stage fright and a career shift to medicine, but her work has resurfaced through various media placements. The album was originally created as a senior project at George School, a Quaker boarding academy in Newtown, Pennsylvania, where she collaborated with music teacher Lars Clutterham. Only 300 copies were initially produced. In 2006, archival label Numero Group included her song 'Eternal Life' on a compilation, and the full album was reissued digitally in 2022 and on vinyl in 2023. Small has recently returned to music, releasing a new song in 2024 and planning performances, having overcome her stage fright. She resides in Cooperstown, New York, and continues to receive royalties from the usage of her music in films and television.
