SHIOYA DESIGN Completes Wood-Framed Osaka House Around a Gymnasium-Like 'Free Space'

architecture-design · 2026-10-01

Completed in 2025 by SHIOYA DESIGN, Osaka House is a 183 sqm wooden residence in Osaka, Japan, designed for two generations. A prominent aspect of this home is its expansive 'free space,' which began as a judo area but has transitioned into a multifunctional gym for sports and family activities. This area features a retractable golf net, a basketball hoop, a bouldering wall, and flexible tatami mats. It seamlessly links indoor and outdoor spaces, incorporating a communal kitchen and dining area, a living room on the second floor, and a rooftop terrace. Gardens provide privacy, while outdoor spaces are perfect for barbecues and relaxation. Photography credit goes to Shotaro Kaide; the project was submitted to designboom by Christina Vergopoulou.
