SHERA Hosts Spring 2026 Roundtable on Digitalization in Art History

The Society of Historians of East European, Eurasian, and Russian Art (SHERA) organized a spring roundtable in 2026 focused on the theme of digitalization within art historical scholarship. This virtual discussion, scheduled for March 24 at 12:00 PM Eastern Daylight Time, featured presentations by several scholars who utilize digital methodologies in their research. Participants included Klara Kemp-Welch, Beata Hock, Raino Isto, and Julia Tulovsky, with Ksenya Gurshtein serving as moderator. The event was presented in collaboration with the online publication ARTMargins. The roundtable's agenda centered on examining how digital tools are applied to art historical inquiry, with specific case studies highlighted. These included a digital reader project concerning modernist art from East-Central Europe created at The Courtauld Institute of Art, the development of an online portal for the Norton Dodge Collection housed at the Zimmerli Art Museum, and the editorial work of ARTMargins Online as a digital platform. Speakers addressed both current applications and future possibilities for digital technologies to reshape research practices, archival access, and the presentation of museum collections in virtual spaces.
