Shao Fan's UK Debut at White Cube Mason's Yard

White Cube will host the inaugural UK exhibition of Shao Fan, a Beijing-based artist also known as Yu Han, born in 1964. This exhibition, titled 'Refrain,' is set to open on May 22 at Mason's Yard in London and will continue until June 27, 2026. The showcase includes ink-on-rice-paper artworks, sculptures, and installations that merge elements of traditional Chinese culture with Western art history. Notable recurring themes are apples featured in 'Fruit 2125' (2025) and 'Fruit 1924' (2024), drawing inspiration from 17th-century Dutch still-life and Georgia O'Keeffe. Additionally, works like 'In The Name of the Rabbit 0322' and '1022' (both 2022) reference Albrecht Dürer's 'Young Hare' (1502), while 'Chinese Cabbage 1425' (2025) reflects northern Chinese winter cuisine. Influenced by Taoist beliefs, Shao Fan's art incorporates calligraphic techniques from the Song dynasty (960–1279) and Neolithic Liangzhu jade art, with his artistic lineage stemming from his parents, who were esteemed artists and professors at the Central Academy of Fine Arts.
