architecture-design · 2026-04-19

The Shanghai Grand Opera House, designed by Snøhetta in collaboration with East China Architectural Design and Research Institute, opens on October 17 after ten years of construction. The 146,786 sq m complex features a helical roof inspired by a bamboo fan, three performance halls, and an on-site production facility. Its opening season includes 82 performances across 47 productions. Snøhetta's design emphasizes public space, with a roof that connects to an underground metro station and parts of the production facility visible from the street. The project reflects a global trend in cultural architecture toward openness and civic engagement.
