Sex workers pose before polluted Sardinian industrial sites in Obscene project

The collective Giuseppefraugallery, active since 2009 in art and political activism, collaborated with sex worker activists Mistress Belle, Jane Grey, and Sonia Nowak to create Obscene, a research and visual art project at Villaggio Norman 4 in Sardinia's Sulcis Iglesiente region. The project uses the aesthetic codes of sex work and fetish as a critical tool to highlight environmental devastation, positioning the activists' bodies in front of symbols of extreme anthropization: the red mud landfill of Iglesias, the Portovesme industrial plant, and the RWM weapons factory in Domusnovas. Developed from 2024 artist residencies, Obscene questions why a sexualized body provokes discomfort while polluted landscapes are met with indifference. Through photographs and performances, the activists' figures become political instruments that challenge habitual ways of seeing these territories. The project argues that the real public scandal is not consensual sexuality but infrastructures that produce death and environmental destruction. The exhibition runs until June 30, 2026, at Villaggio Norman 4, Sardinia.
