Sergey Piskunov: Hyperrealism as a Tool for Exploring Identity

Sergey Piskunov, an artist originally from Ukraine and currently residing in the Netherlands, has cultivated a hyperrealistic painting style that emphasizes emotional and psychological resonance rather than just technical skill. Born in 1989, he has been self-taught in painting since 2008. His expansive oil artworks often feature gold leaf, fragmented surfaces, and mask-like shapes, delving into themes of identity, vulnerability, and change. The Masks series stands out as a pivotal expression of his artistic vision. In 2025, he appeared on the Dutch national television show Sterren op het Doek, and in 2026, he was honored with the Juror's Choice Award from the Circle Foundation for the Arts. His solo exhibition 'Masks' took place at Pulchri Studio in The Hague, and his work has been showcased at The Other Art Fair in London, as well as in various publications like Beautiful Bizarre Magazine and Hyperrealism Magazine. His paintings are part of private collections in Europe, North America, the Middle East, and Asia. Piskunov believes that craftsmanship serves as a medium for communication, encouraging viewers to look beyond superficial appearances.
