Selldorf Architects Reveals Design for Clark Art Institute Expansion

Selldorf Architects has unveiled the design for a new wing at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts. Commissioned in October 2024, the Aso O. Tavitian Wing will add 1,394 m² of space, including twelve galleries and art storage, connecting the Museum Building and the Manton Research Center. The wing will house the Aso O. Tavitian Collection of European art assembled in the 21st century. Landscape architect Reed Hilderbrand is designing the surrounding grounds with native plantings. The façade will feature multicolored veined marble, while interiors will use white oak. A large east-facing window and west-facing openings will provide natural light and views of Stone Hill. Groundbreaking is set for January 2027, with completion expected in 2028. Annabelle Selldorf described the wing as a companion to the existing buildings, with distinct architectural identity and intimate yet memorable gallery proportions.
