Sculptor Lloyd Le Blanc, Known for Bronze Flora and Fauna Works, Dies at 85

Lloyd Le Blanc, an American-born sculptor celebrated for his large-scale bronze works depicting plants and animals, has passed away at age 85. He established a notable career alongside his wife, Judith Holmes Drewry, with whom he founded the Le Blanc Fine Art foundry in Saxby, Leicestershire. The couple converted old farm buildings into studios and a bronze casting facility, where Le Blanc was involved in every stage of production, from initial clay modeling to final metal casting. He also provided casting services for numerous other artists through his foundry. A significant patron was chef Raymond Blanc, who commissioned several sculptures from the 1980s onward to decorate the gardens of his Oxfordshire hotel, Le Manoir aux Quat'Saisons, including a prominent artichoke sculpture. Born in Boston to a shipwright father and housekeeper mother, Le Blanc spent early years in Nova Scotia before returning to Boston for secondary education. He earned both a fine arts degree and a master's degree from Yale University. After teaching at a Connecticut art college, where he met his future wife, the couple moved to Britain. There, Judith studied at Norwich School of Art while Lloyd worked as a welder on North Sea oil rigs and later taught sculpture at Falmouth College of Art in Cornwall. They returned to the United States, building a foundry on a San Francisco beach and supporting themselves by selling sculptures. In 1972, married by then, they permanently relocated to Judith's family farm in Saxby, establishing their foundry business and creating a sculpture garden open to visitors. Following Judith's death in 2011, Le Blanc focused on smaller pieces but continued working until his final bronze pour at age 85. Beyond his artistic practice, he enjoyed gardening, cooking, political discussions, and storytelling, making Saxby a welcoming community for friends, family, and fellow artists. He is survived by two children and a granddaughter.
