Schwerin's Duchamp Collection Reimagined After Four-Year Renovation
In October 2025, the Staatliche Museum Schwerin reopened its doors following a four-year renovation, featuring more than 90 pieces by Marcel Duchamp. Recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2024, the museum obtained the Duchamp collection in 1997 through the efforts of former director Kornelia von Berswordt-Wallrabe and Ronny van de Velde. Curator Kerstin Krautwig, who has been in charge of the collection since 2022, opted for dark gray modular walls to facilitate annual exhibit changes. The exhibition revolves around three central themes: 'What makes a work of art?', 'What is a Readymade?', and 'Language as invisible color', with a standout station displaying four double-sided drawings from 1917. The renovation also expanded the space for modern art by 400 square meters, resulting in a significant rise in visitor attendance due to free admission.
