Sayuri Ichida's Photographic Exploration of Sisterhood and Memory in Niigata

Sayuri Ichida’s exhibition, titled 'Playing the Piano Upstairs,' is currently on display at the Photographers' Gallery in London until September 13. This collection showcases photographs that delve into the evolving bond between Ichida and her sister, all set against the backdrop of Niigata, Japan's snowy landscapes. Living in Margate, Ichida explores themes of self-identity, drawing from her own memories. The series captures their relationship, which shifted from childhood distance to a fragile yet strong connection after their mother passed away in their late teens. Using photopolymer photogravure on Japanese washi paper, Ichida's prints evoke deep emotions of memory, grief, and sisterhood. The snowy scenes symbolize memory’s elusive nature.
