Sauerbruch Hutton Converts Telekom Tower into Apartments in Konstanz

Sauerbruch Hutton has transformed the Telekom Tower, a 1970s office building southeast of Konstanz's historic city center, into a residential building. The adaptive reuse project, completed in 2026, covers an area of 20,260 m². The tower, once perceived as an alien presence due to its height and architectural language, now integrates into the urban fabric through conversion. The project preserves embodied energy and avoids CO₂ emissions from new construction. The high-rise typology is seen as a forward-looking solution for dense cities with high green space. The original DNA remains legible while its impact is reinterpreted. The team includes Louisa Hutton, Matthias Sauerbruch, Vera Hartmann, and others. Structural engineering by Werner Sobek, building services by ATM Herbert Marks GmbH and GET Solutions, landscape planning by SINAI, and fire safety by HHP.
