Sardinia's Environmentalists Block Brazilian Luxury Resort in Protected Coastal Area

In a significant victory for environmental activists, a proposed luxury resort in Sardinia's protected Cala Finanza area has been halted. The project, backed by Brazilian billionaire José Auriemo Neto's JHSF Participações, one of the world's largest luxury tourism groups, aimed to build a mega resort including a five-star hotel with fifty rooms, twenty-six villas, an eighteen-hole golf course, a helipad, and a marina. The plan had received approval from Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, but a strong mobilization of the national environmental movement, sparked by a denunciation article by Gian Antonio Stella in Corriere della Sera, forced the government to revoke the permits. The article, titled 'Dalla Gallura a Durazzo: turismo predatorio' (From Gallura to Durrës: predatory tourism), highlights the broader issue of unchecked tourism development in the Mediterranean. The victory is seen as important and far from guaranteed, reflecting growing concerns about the impact of mass tourism on natural landscapes.
