Sara Jean Ruiz's Quilted Testimonies of Trauma and Survival

Textile artist Sara Jean Ruiz, based in Pittsburgh, creates autobiographical quilts that confront her childhood of neglect and abuse. Her works, such as 'i'm hungree plees doit get mad' (2025), incorporate family photographs, handwritten notes, and recycled fabrics to explore the complexities of care and harm within her family. Ruiz grew up on a farm in Orange Grove, Texas, in a conservative, religious household where she was homeschooled. She learned to sew and crochet as a form of autonomy, eventually earning an MFA in printmaking from The Ohio State University in 2023. Diagnosed with CPTSD, she uses art to process her trauma. Her piece 'i understand this might bring up some mixed feelings' (2025) features her Care Bears baby blanket with text assembled from photos of her screaming as an infant and adult, referencing a text from her estranged mother. Ruiz has reclaimed her family archive, incorporating childhood artifacts into her work. Her piece 'same but different' (2025) depicts a childhood photo of herself with closed eyes, surrounded by the text 'It can feel the same, it can be different.' Ruiz shares her work on social media to foster conversations about abuse and recovery. Her studio is at Brewhouse Arts in Pittsburgh.
