San Telmo and Fundación Mapfre Joint Exhibition on Modern Drawing
San Telmo Museoa in San Sebastián and Fundación Mapfre have partnered to present 'Dibujar la modernidad (1864-1968)', an exhibition of nearly 160 drawings spanning from the late 19th to mid-20th century. The show builds on a 2009 Mapfre exhibition 'La mano con lápiz. Dibujos del siglo XX', which first highlighted drawing as an autonomous art form. Curated by Leyre Bozal, the exhibition combines works from Mapfre's collection with those from San Telmo's own holdings, including pieces by international figures like Degas, Picasso, Juan Gris, Maruja Mallo, Auguste Rodin, and Egon Schiele, as well as Basque artists such as Zuloaga, Aurelio Arteta, Nicolás Lekuona, Mari Puri Herrero, and María Paz Jiménez. The display emphasizes drawing's spontaneity and authenticity, presenting it as a pure, primitive art close to unconscious impulses. San Telmo's drawings have been accumulated over 125 years through purchases, donations, and deposits, with the first entering the collection in 1901. The exhibition runs from June 20 to September 27, 2026.
