Sam Yates on Directing Josh O’Connor in Golden Boy at Almeida Theatre

This production, which runs from 8 September to 31 October, marks O’Connor’s return to the stage after more than ten years. Yates, who holds O’Connor's talent in high regard, worked alongside Odets’ son, Walt, to delve into personal archives for a deeper understanding of the playwright's vision. Set against the backdrop of Depression-era New York, the narrative explores the tension between artistic passion and financial gain as Joe, a talented violinist, is lured into boxing. The ensemble features Hayley Squires, Daniel Mays, Stanley Townsend, and Zubin Varla, accompanied by a live string quartet.
