Sally Gall's 'Vertical World' Brings Western Giants to Pietrasanta
From June 28 to August 9, 2026, Accesso Galleria in Pietrasanta will host Sally Gall's first solo exhibition in Italy, 'Vertical World.' The show features ten medium-to-large archival pigment prints capturing monumental rock walls across the American West. Gall's fascination began in 2021 during a rafting trip in the Grand Canyon, where she felt dwarfed by the landscape. She subsequently traveled to canyons in the Colorado Plateau, Utah, Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, and New Mexico. Her photographs emphasize geological processes—rain, erosion, landslides, earthquakes, geothermal activity—presenting rock as a living organism. By eliminating spatial references like the horizon and minimizing shadows and highlights, Gall pushes her documentary approach toward abstraction, turning landscapes into painterly surfaces. She describes her goal as photographing 'the Earth in action,' a sculptural world shaped by wind and time. The exhibition invites viewers to reconsider the vitality of the natural world and find the extraordinary in the ordinary.
