Sally Gabori's Vibrant Abstract Landscapes at Karma Gallery

Mirdidingkingathi Juwarnda Sally Gabori, an Aboriginal painter who began her artistic career at age 81, is the subject of a solo exhibition titled 'a story place out to sea' at Karma Gallery in Los Angeles. Born on Bentinck Island, Australia, Gabori was dispossessed of her homeland in 1948 alongside the Kaiadilt people. Her paintings, created from 2005 until her death, use abstraction and expressive brushwork to explore memory, displacement, and the sensory qualities of landscape. Works such as 'My Country' (2009) and 'King Alfred's Country' (2006) reflect sites tied to her family and the stone fish traps of the Kaiadilt. Gabori's practice blends personal and political narratives, asserting that emotional ties to land transcend colonial borders. The exhibition runs from June 4 to July 17, 2026.
