Saif Azzuz's Rapid Rise: Solo Shows, Monograph, and Storm King Commission

Bay Area artist Saif Azzuz is experiencing a career surge with multiple exhibitions and a new monograph. His second solo show at Anthony Meier Fine Arts in Mill Valley, California, titled 'Aiy-ye-kwee'', runs through June 26 and coincides with his first monograph published by Sming Sming Books. The exhibition features new paintings, sculptures, wall murals, and collaborative works by his wife Lulu Thrower, Libby Black, and Sean McFarland. Azzuz also has an installation at the Oakland Museum of California focusing on Indigenous fire practices, which the museum recently acquired, and a temporary outdoor sculpture at Storm King Art Center in Mountainville, New York. The Storm King piece, 'weych - pues / tàkhòne (where the rivers meet)', is a nearly 25-foot-long assemblage made from salvaged car parts and natural materials, referencing sturgeon significance to Indigenous peoples of both Northern California and the Hudson Valley. Azzuz, of Libyan descent and a registered member of the Yurok Tribe, highlights Indigenous land stewardship and ecological themes. His first solo museum show was at the Blaffer Art Museum at the University of Houston, and his first solo gallery show in West Asia was at Lawrie Shabibi in Dubai.
