Russian Baritone Sergej Leiferkus Celebrates 80th Birthday with Distinguished Career Retrospective

Russian baritone Sergej Leiferkus, born in Leningrad shortly after World War II, will turn eighty years old on Easter Saturday. His career spans decades as one of the foremost interpreters of major baritone roles in Italian and Russian opera repertoire. Leiferkus demonstrated his continued vitality with a performance in Rimsky-Korsakov's 'Christmas Eve' at the Bavarian State Opera at the end of 2025. He grew up without his father, who died in 1947, and began working in a factory at age fifteen while singing in a university choir. His vocal teacher Maria Matveyeva had previously instructed renowned bass Yevgeny Nesterenko. After competition successes and early roles at Leningrad's Maly Theater, conductor Yuri Temirkanov recruited him for the part of Andrei in Prokofiev's 'War and Peace' at the Kirov Theater, now known as the Mariinsky Theater. International debuts in Ireland, Scotland, and France during the early 1980s established his global reputation. Leiferkus has collaborated with diverse conductors including Nikolaus Harnoncourt, James Levine, Valery Gergiev, and Colin Davis, showcasing his stylistic adaptability. His singing is characterized by precise articulation, technical mastery of ornamentation, and distinctive vocal colors. He has recorded Mussorgsky's complete songs with pianist Semjon Skigin, delivering nuanced interpretations that range from subtle melancholy to dramatic intensity.
