Ruben Moutinho Turns Discarded Research Prototypes Into Sculptures in 'The Form That Remained'
Ruben Moutinho, an industrial designer, has unveiled THE FORM THAT REMAINED, a collection of distinctive sculptures crafted from obsolete components and discarded research prototypes. This initiative repurposes materials from scientific advancements, preserving the shapes and designs from their testing phases. Each sculpture is named after the original project: SHESOIL, AUTONOVA, LIVIA, BRIVA, ACTIVA, and UNIKA. STRATA, a key piece in the collection, involves the cutting, fragmenting, and merging of parts from a single project. Moutinho's technique showcases a variety of colors and textures, resulting in unique objects with irregular shapes. The project examines the persistence of physical matter beyond its functional life, transforming outdated components into lasting art. It was submitted via designboom's DIY feature and edited by Christina Vergopoulou.
Key facts
- THE FORM THAT REMAINED is a project by industrial designer and researcher Ruben Moutinho
- The series transforms discarded research prototypes, experimental models, and obsolete components into one-of-a-kind sculptural objects
- Each sculpture retains the name or acronym of its source research project, including SHESOIL, AUTONOVA, LIVIA, BRIVA, ACTIVA, and UNIKA
- STRATA is the central material process, involving cutting, fragmenting, collage, overlapping, and fusion of components from a single research initiative
- The assembly combines technical structures with organic shapes without masking boundaries between parts
- The resulting objects are non-reproducible, with irregular geometries and layered surfaces
- The project was submitted through designboom's DIY submissions feature
- Christina Vergopoulou edited the designboom feature
