Ross Barney Architects transforms Chicago's Auburn Gresham with mixed-use development

Ross Barney Architects (RBA) has completed two mixed-use buildings in Chicago's Auburn Gresham neighborhood as part of the city's Invest South/West initiative. The project, developed by Evergreen Housing, transforms vacant lots along 79th Street into 88 residential units with commercial space. Initially, residents opposed a 60-unit proposal, feeling unheard. RBA reworked community engagement, holding virtual and in-person sessions during the pandemic. They discovered younger residents were leaving due to lack of housing and amenities. The team secured a second lot, splitting units: 28 on the original site and 30 on the second, with a 58-unit building featuring sunflower-colored balconies and a rooftop deck. All units are rented, mostly to younger tenants. A restaurant will occupy retail space at the second site. RBA is also designing a new Metra transit station nearby. The project demonstrates community-driven revitalization, addressing generational gaps and providing housing for the next generation.
