Rosana Paulino's ¿História Natural? at the New School's Vera List Center Through November 1
Rosana Paulino's exhibition, titled ¿História Natural?, is on view at the Arnold and Sheila Aronson Galleries of the New School until November 1. The Vera List Center for Art and Politics organized this showcase, which focuses on her 2016 artist's book that earned her the Jane Lombard Prize for Art and Social Justice and a $25,000 grant for the years 2025 to 2027. The book incorporates linocut and drypoint methods, featuring altered images from Louis Agassiz's 1865–66 expedition in Brazil, intricately layered on paper and fabric. As the first Afro-Brazilian woman to obtain a PhD in visual arts in Brazil, Paulino explores the lasting effects of colonialism on Black communities, particularly women. In an October 5 chat with Hyperallergic, she reflected on her art, including the naturalist album that shaped Brazilian visuals. This year, Brazil’s Venice Biennale pavilion, curated by Diane Lima, drew inspiration from Paulino's 2024 series, Comigo ninguém pode ('No one can beat me').
