Rosa Bonheur and the Horse: Château de Chantilly Exhibition Explores the Painter's Equine Passion
From September 12 to January 3, the Château de Chantilly presents 'Rosa Bonheur et le cheval,' curated by Charlène Totin. This exhibition showcases approximately forty seldom-seen pieces from Bonheur's previous residence, Château de By, highlighting her deep bond with horses, which are integral to the Chantilly estate. Among the works is the museum's painting, Le Berger des Pyrénées, commissioned in 1864 by Marie-Caroline de Bourbon-Siciles. The exhibition is organized into thematic areas, featuring anatomical studies at the Musée vivant du Cheval and artistic processes in the graphic arts cabinet. Additionally, it underscores Bonheur's commitment to animal welfare. The Musée Condé's Berger des Pyrénées was acquired in June 1864, and Bonheur visited Chantilly in 1894.
