Robert Mondavi Winery Reopens After Three-Year Renovation by Surfacedesign and Aidlin Darling Design

architecture-design · 2026-04-19

The Robert Mondavi Winery in Napa Valley reopened in April after a three-year closure for a comprehensive renovation led by Aidlin Darling Design, Surfacedesign, and BAMO. The project, encompassing 215,844 square feet across nearly 94 acres, restores Cliff May's 1966 Spanish Ranch-style entrance—a 14.5-foot gabled arch and bell tower—while integrating the landscape with the architecture. Surfacedesign replaced a large lawn with pollinator-friendly gardens and a paved amphitheater, and designed the campus to frame views of the Mayacamas Mountains and To Kalon vineyard. The south wing features glazed operable walls, a butterfly roof for stormwater collection, and a water feature that doubles as a cistern. The design team removed ad hoc additions to harmonize architecture, landscape, and winemaking. The estate vineyard has been certified organic since 2023, and the project emphasizes drought-resistant flora and water responsibility. Key collaborators include BAR Architects & Interiors, Summit Engineering, and others.
