Richard Hawkins' 'Potentialities' Survey Opens at Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover

Richard Hawkins' extensive survey 'Potentialities' has opened at Kestner Gesellschaft in Hannover, running from April 24 to August 2, 2026. The exhibition, previously shown at Kunsthalle Wien, spans seven rooms and covers the last 20 years of the Los Angeles-based artist's oeuvre, including paintings, ceramic reliefs, sculptures, collages, and video works. Hawkins openly shares his research processes, dedicating rooms to artists Forrest Bess, Pierre Bonnard, Tatsumi Hijikata, and Mike Kelley. The show features 'House Capriccio,' a miniature haunted house, and a video work 'The Lust for Evil Sequence (Vienna Version)' that loops slowed clips of a young Tom Cruise. Hawkins also reveals his use of a projector and digital references, including an AI-generated rat-like creature, in a tutorial-like video. The exhibition is accompanied by a reading shelf with books such as José Esteban Muñoz's 'Disidentifications' and Karol Radziszewski's 'The Power of Secrets.'
