Rezen Converts 1903 Fremantle Hotel Stables into Alchemy Saunas Wellness Centre
Rezen, an interior design firm, has finalized the Alchemy Saunas wellness center located in a repurposed stable and cellar of the Royal George Hotel in Fremantle, Australia, which was established in 1903 and is undergoing redevelopment. The design incorporates red brick and local Tamala limestone, enhanced by steel and tilework that evoke the ambiance of a Roman bathhouse. Rhys Bowring, the studio director, highlighted a practical design approach that focuses on utilizing existing materials. Guests access the facility via the hotel basement, which leads to changing rooms and showers concealed behind a stainless steel wall. The sauna, featuring glazing and tiles, along with two pools—a cold plunge and a warm magnesium pool—are situated within the old stable, illuminated by arched windows. Photography by Jack Lovel.
