Reza Afshar's Digital Paintings Build Vast Alien Worlds Rooted in Science-Fiction Cinema

Reza Afshar, an Iranian freelance artist specializing in environmental concepts, crafts intricate digital artworks that depict vast realms of science fiction and fantasy. Since launching his professional career in 2012, he has been active in various fields, including video games, film, animation, and trading-card games, with recent reports indicating he resides in Istanbul. His artwork emphasizes landscapes over characters, showcasing monumental ruins, harsh deserts, glowing alien landscapes, deserted industrial structures, distant spacecraft, and tiny human figures overwhelmed by their surroundings. The landscapes convey the story rather than merely serving as a backdrop, encouraging viewers to ponder the history and mysteries of these locations. Afshar’s style evokes the grandeur of sci-fi films, drawing parallels to works like Prometheus, Mad Max, Interstellar, and Dune, while exploring themes of dystopia, cyberpunk, noir, fantasy, and post-apocalypse. His work embodies a recurring contrast between beauty and peril, where vibrant colors and light can evoke feelings of hostility and abandonment. His portfolio can be viewed on Instagram under the handle @rezaa_afsharr, featuring a collection of his paintings.
