Residuum Movement: Jet Le Parti and Base 36 Forge a New Aesthetic Framework

The Residuum movement, centered on artist and theorist Jet Le Parti and the Base 36 collective, has been quietly developing since 2020. Emerging from Agency Media Group in Bushwick, Brooklyn, the movement encompasses the RP.1 label, Converting Culture magazine, 121.radio, and spaces in Brooklyn, Berlin, and Los Angeles. Le Parti's 2021 text 'Errors & Residuals' and the 2025 follow-up 'Residuum: On the Phenomenology of Saturation and the Aesthetics of Afterwards' articulate a framework treating the present as raw material for art composed from saturated conditions rather than depicting them. The collective includes artists Tino Park, L.S. Toy, and Moto Joho, sound artist Matteo Merriam, and curator Andrea Angel. Park's endurance walk from New York to Florida (2,080 miles, October 2024–February 2025) and Toy's collaboration with Le Parti and Reign.925 on 'Rocket Man' (2026) exemplify the cohort's output. The movement refuses formal declaration, preferring to let the work accumulate evidence. Le Parti's painting oscillates between degraded signal-surfaces and classical figuration, while sound works explore 'drift techno' in Brooklyn warehouses. The philosophical apparatus draws on Heidegger, Baudrillard, Stiegler, and Fisher, diagnosing a saturated void where every gesture is pre-coded.
