He was a key member of the Watts 103rd Street Rhythm Band, whose tracks like 'Express Yourself' were later sampled by hip-hop groups including N.W.A. Gadson's drumming powered hits like Withers' 'Use Me' and 'Lean on Me,' Ross's 'Love Hangover,' Gaye's 'I Want You,' and Gloria Gaynor's 'I Will Survive.'
