Renoir's Life and Legacy: From Porcelain Painter to Impressionist Master

Pierre-Auguste Renoir, born in Limoges, France in 1841, moved to Paris in 1844 where his early interest in music gave way to a career in art. He worked in a porcelain factory before enrolling at the École des Beaux-Arts and studying under Charles Gleyre, meeting Claude Monet and Alfred Sisley. He exhibited at the Paris Salon in the 1860s and gained recognition in 1868. During the Paris Commune in 1871, he was saved from execution by Raoul Rigault, a revolutionary he had once hidden. In 1874, he participated in the first Impressionist exhibition with Sisley, Monet, Camille Pissarro, Edgar Degas, and Paul Cézanne. His works include 'Dance at Bougival' (1883, Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), featuring Suzanne Valadon, and 'Luncheon at the Boating Party' (1880-1881, The Phillips Collection, Washington, DC). In the 1880s, he broke from Impressionism, traveling to Algeria, Italy, and Spain, and adopting a more classical style known as his 'Ingres Period.' He married Aline Victorine Charigot in 1890, and their son Jean Renoir became a renowned filmmaker. Despite arthritis diagnosed in 1892, Renoir continued to paint and sculpt, with works in the Louvre by 1919. He died of a heart attack that year. His paintings are displayed worldwide, cementing his legacy as a seminal Impressionist.
